Gentle Range vs Down Dog: yoga practice or easy stretches?
One app is built for easy stretches you can do in a chair. The other builds you a yoga practice. People mix them up all the time, so here are the facts and a clear way to pick.
Gentle Range is stretching-first and built to fit into a gap in your day: short guided workouts with a calm voice, an easier option on each move, a fully seated Chair Session and no yoga experience needed. Down Dog is a yoga app that builds a new practice each time you start, and it suits people who already enjoy yoga.
If you want easy stretches without learning poses, start with Gentle Range. If you want a yoga practice with many styles, Down Dog is the stronger fit. Prices and app details here are as of October 2026, from each app’s own pages.

What is Gentle Range built for?
Easy stretching you can slot into a day. You do not need to know any poses. A calm voice guides you through each move, a moving picture shows you what to do, and short written steps sit underneath. The voice is made with voice software, and some of the newest moves use your phone’s own voice for now. Prefer quiet? Switch the voice off and soft chimes take over.
Workouts run from about 5 minutes up to about an hour, though most take 6 to 10. That makes them easy to fit around a day: between calls, at the kettle, before bed. [[stats Gentle Range in numbers | From the app and its website, as of October 2026.]] 6 to 10 min | How long most workouts take 201 | Moves in the app, talked through by the voice guide 3 to 15 min | Daily Fit time choices: 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes 0 | Accounts or ads in the app [[/stats]]
Holds stay comfortable, each move has an easier option, and a short “Take care” note says what to watch for and when to stop. If you have never done yoga, our gentle morning stretch plan for beginners shows how simple a start can be.
It is also built for people who would rather stay seated. Chair Session is free and done fully seated, and every workout shows whether it is standing, seated or on the floor. There are no ads in the app, it works offline with no account, and it runs on iPhone and Android.
Gentle, not medical. Gentle Range is general wellness content, not medical treatment, and so is any yoga app. Stay in a comfortable range and stop if anything hurts. If you have an injury or condition, ask a professional first.

Myth or fact: what do people get wrong about yoga and stretching apps?
Myth: stretching is just yoga with a different name
Fact: they overlap, but they are not the same. Yoga is a practice with poses, breathing and flow. Stretching is simply easing a muscle. Some Gentle Range moves, such as Cat-Cow, have names you might know from yoga, and that is fine. The difference is the frame: Gentle Range is a stretching app, not a yoga class.
Where each app sits
How much yoga is in the practice.
Myth: you need a mat
Fact: it depends on what you choose. Many Gentle Range workouts are seated or standing and need no mat at all, though some are on the floor. Each workout is labelled, so you know before you start. Down Dog’s Restorative style is floor-only, according to its FAQ.
Myth: gentle yoga and a chair session are the same
Fact: not quite. Gentle Range’s Chair Session is done fully seated and is free. Down Dog’s Gentle style has standing and floor poses, per its FAQ, and we did not see a chair-based style described there. Our guide to chair stretches for older adults has seated ideas you can try without either app.
Myth: a gentle app has to be a long one
Fact: both can be short. Gentle Range workouts start at about 5 minutes. Down Dog lets you choose the length of your practice. A short, easy session done most days is worth more to many people than a long one done rarely.
Myth: you need to be flexible first
Fact: neither app asks for it. Gentle Range keeps holds comfortable, with an easier option on each move. Down Dog’s FAQ suggests starting at Beginner 1.
Where is Down Dog stronger?
If you want yoga, Down Dog is a very good place to do it. It is listed on the App Store as Yoga | Down Dog, made by Yoga Buddhi Co, with a 4.9 out of 5 rating. Each time you start, it builds a practice from the length, level, focus, voice and music you choose. The store page lists more than ten styles, including Vinyasa, Restorative, Yin and Wake-Up Yoga, and six teacher voices. Its website says you can download practices for offline use, practise in 13 languages and cast to a TV with Chromecast or AirPlay.

Our view: for stretching on an ordinary busy day, Gentle Range is the simpler place to begin.
How could you try Gentle Range this week?
Start small. A weekday at four o’clock, with sore hips from sitting, is a good first slot. Our guide to hip stretches after sitting all day is a good example of that smaller job, and Gentle Range can guide you through a version of it.
Try it for a week at the same time of day and notice whether you reach for it without having to talk yourself into it. If you also love yoga, keep Down Dog for a weekend morning with room and time. The two get along well.
Fair comparison note: Down Dog is a product name or trademark of its owner. JPott Studios is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by it. What we say here comes from its own pages and public store listings, read in October 2026, and may have changed since, so please check the source before you decide.
